The Dow Jones Industrial Average rallied for 18 years post war, traded essentially flat for 18 during the 60s and 70s and then rallied for 18 years to the 2000 peak. The flat period comprising the great 1974 bear market clearly was not calm but contained huge tradeable swings. If we are now two years into the next great flat period then buy and hold will not work.
